CAROL GOES EXTRA MILE FOR TRUST

For most fans, supporting Raith Rovers means heading along to Stark’s Park on a Saturday to cheer on the team but for Carol Smith, it involves running a 5k race, swimming in open water and cycling for over 12 miles. That’s because Raith Supporters’ Trust member, Carol, is competing in her second Barcelona triathlon to raise funds for the Kirkcaldy club.

Carol, originally from Burntisland, has been living in Spain for the last seven years after falling in love with the Catalan capital whilst on holiday. When looking for a way to get fit, a friend joked that she should attempt the triathalon.  Always up for a challenge, she looked into it and decided to give it a go and also use the opportunity to help out her beloved Rovers.

“I knew I would need a bit of extra motivation to keep me going so I decided to look for sponsorship. I have been a Rovers fans since the age of ten when my mum first took me along to Stark’s Park and, as Raith Rovers are essential to the community I grew up in, I wanted to do my bit to help. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could get off the sofa and be able to swim, cycle and run across the finishing line but the support of a few football fans behind me has really helped.”

Carol is currently training hard and looking forward to completing her second triathlon on Sunday October 6th. Things are going well and the only difficulty, so far, has been the swarm of jellyfish she encountered on one of her open water training sessions, although she admits this probably made her swim a bit faster that day.  Despite living over a thousand miles away from the team she supports, she manages to keep up with what is happening at Stark’s Park.

“When I first moved to Barcelona, I spent my time standing in a phone box calling home for the scores but now, thanks to Rovers Abroad, I can watch the games on my computer. I’ve even watched a game from my sun bed on the beach in Barcelona!”

SUPPORTERS TRUST HELPS OUT CLUB SHOP

The Raith Supporters Trust was recently approached by the Supporters Club to help provide working capital to enable them to purchase additional stock. The lack of working capital and subsequent lack of stock in the Club Shop had arisen due to a situation out – with the control of the Supporters Club.

We believe the Supporters Club perform a very important function in runningthe club shop on behalf of the football club and therefore the Board of Raith Rovers Supporters Trust unanimously agreed to provide a loan of £1,000 to assist them in purchasing stock for the current season.  This loan was provided from funds we had earmarked for investment in the football club later in the season.

The intention is that this investment will assist the Supporters Club in generating enough profit to both repay our initial investment and, over time, establish their own working capital. We will be receiving regular updates from the Supporters Club on the impact of our investment.

We believe that this decision reinforces the positive cooperation between the fan groups at Raith Rovers and will ultimately generate additional income for the Football club. Supporters Trust Quiz

We are holding a Quiz Night at 7pm on Thursday 26th September in the Raith Suite at Starks Park. Teams will be able to test their knowledge on a wide range of subjects including music, film and television, news, general knowledge, Fife and of course, Scottish football.

Alan Russell, Chairman of the Raith Supporters Trust said “We are looking forward to welcoming people along to our quiz night. The event is open to all whether you’re a Rovers fan or just a fan of pub quizzes. There will be something for everyone and a few surprises on the night”

Entry is £10 per person which includes food for the evening, a free drink and a chance to win a top cash prize.

Investments by Raith Forum supporters groups to RRFC

The recent election of the supporters representative sparked a lot of discussion amongst Rovers supporters regarding the role of both the Raith Forum and the supporters representative. In order to clarify these issues we’d like to revisit the principles of shared ownership that were agreed by the various supporters groups several years ago.

During the 2005 “Reclaim The Rovers” fundraising campaign and subsequent takeover, the five supporters groups (Raith Rovers Supporters Club, 200 Club, Jim McMillan Club, Fife’s Finest, and Raith Supporters Trust) agreed that the Raith Supporters Trust would hold the collective supporters’ shareholding on behalf of the Raith Forum, due to its legal status as an Industrial & Provident Society. The Raith Supporters Trust would subsequently also administer the ongoing process of electing a board member to represent this shareholding on the board of New Raith Rovers Ltd.

At the time of the takeover, the funds raised by supporters during the campaign purchased a shareholding in New Raith Rovers Ltd of around 14% of the shares issued. As a result of new investment in recent years our collective shareholding now represents approximately 11.5% of the issued shares in New Raith Rovers Ltd.

A clause in the Memorandum and Articles states that a shareholding of 10% guarantees representation on the board of directors of New Raith Rovers Ltd, therefore it is essential that we maintain this level of investment.

In March 2006 at a meeting of the Raith Forum, it was agreed that all future contribution of funds by the member groups should be made as investments and held in a single shareholding by the Raith Supporters Trust on behalf of the supporters groups. A single shareholding gives the supporters the strongest voice possible within the company structure, while also ensuring that the supporters’ contributions can directly support the running of the football club.

Since 2006 further investment has been made via the Raith Supporters Trust by a number of the Raith Forum member groups and also by other non-member groups (most notably Fife’s Finest). However, in some cases shares have been purchased by supporters groups directly or made in the form of donations, and therefore cannot contribute to maintaining the fan’s collective shareholding.

It is critical that we continue to invest in the club through a single shareholding and therefore strive to channel the vast majority of our contributions to the club through this route. The football club board have made it clear that they are very comfortable with the principle that contributions by supporters groups can be treated as investments in return for shares.

This may seem like a relatively unimportant issue at present as we have a very positive relationship between the board of the football club and the supporters. Our own experience in the years leading up to the 2005 takeover, and the experience of fans at other football clubs where the relationship has not been so positive should be a clear reminder to us how fortunate we are at present. It is in these tougher times that issues of ownership and governance take on greater importance to us all, and maintaining the strongest voice possible during the good times is part of our “insurance policy” in case we ever find ourselves in the face of another crisis in the future.
