Community Groups Support Anti-Racism Week of Action

Two local community groups have joined forces to combat racism by organising an all-day 5-a-side tournament at Kirkcaldy High School on Sunday 17th October.

The Raith Rovers Supporters’ Trust and FRAE Fife (Fairness, Race Awareness and Equality) have scheduled the tournament to coincide with football’s “Anti-Racism Week of Action” which is supported with similar events throughout Europe between October 14 and 26.

All 42 Scottish professional clubs will also back the Week of Action with help from anti-racist charity, “Show Racism the Red Card”.

Co-organiser JP Easton, FRAE Fife Co-ordinator explained, “We are happy to support this initiative as it provides an opportunity for people from different cultures and backgrounds to spend time together and enjoy themselves. People soon realise that if they have similar interests, they will and do have other things in common.” He went on: “Show Racism the Red Card is an excellent initiative but is usually associated with Premier League Clubs it is great to see something being done locally. The legendary Eusebio said:” Black or white we all have football under our skin.”

Trust organiser, James Proctor added, “We sometimes forget that football can break down barriers and bring people together through their shared enjoyment of the game itself. As Raith Rovers supporters we know that this community has helped sustain the football club for over 100 years and we wanted to help give something back to that community. Hopefully this tournament will a great success and help reinforce the message that racism has no place in our society.”

The tournament itself will feature 12 teams from a range of ethnic backgrounds. Kick-off is 10.30am with the final scheduled for around 3.30pm.

One or two places are still available for teams or individuals who would like to participate. Contact the Trust on 0870 432 1987.
