League Cup re-vamp… what do you think?

Earlier this week it was announced that the League Cup will be restructured to include a group stage before the beginning of the league season, bonus points for penalty shoot-out victories, and a winter break for the top tier clubs (and potentially for clubs in the divisions below).

Tried it before in the late 70’s and it was scrapped as fans didn’t attend. If this is happening in July, will the diddy cup now start in February ?

I like the idea of the £8m in sponsorship! Like you Graeme I’m not so sure about the timing of this though – would the team need pre-season warm-up games before this starts? It could be a bit of a lottery if some teams are match fit already and others are straight back off the beach…

I can just see fans flocking in their droves to a group match against East Stirling/Inverurie Locos on a wet Tuesday night when both teams are already mathematically out. Idiotic and greedy idea (they seem to think more games automatically equates to more money without considering first if there’s an appetite for those matches). The SPFL couldn’t run a whelk stall.

This competition is long overdue for a revamp imo.
My preference would be to invite another 6 teams to make it a 48 team competition at the outset. Seed and divide the teams over 8 groups according to their finishing places in the previous term. 8 sections with 1 from the 1st seed pot and one from the second and so on. Each team to play each other H & A with the top two from each section going forward into a 4 sections of 4 (seeded again) again H & A format with the top 2 going forward to the quarter finals (H & A) then winners to semis then onto a final. Lots of games but at least all of there small teams get at least 1 home game against a 1st seed side and if the big boys don’t like it they can blood their youngsters if they like.
